5 ways to create a sustainable wardrobe•
Publicerat augusti 20 2020
Fashion magazines and advertising can often leave us with a desire for more clothes but a quick fashion fix often just leaves us with an empty feeling. Being good to the planet and other people gives us all a sense of purpose. In this 5-step guide we show you that it doesn’t have to be a drag to create a more sustainable wardrobe and give you easy tips on how you can incorporate more sustainable practices into your wardrobe.
#1 Organise Your Wardrobe - “Does this item bring me joy?”
When choice is too plentiful it becomes harder to make a decision. To help you fall in love with your closet again, we suggest that you spend a day or two decluttering it. A favourite expert of ours in the field of tidying up is organisational guru Marie Kondo, author of the best-selling book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. She recommends looking at each and every piece of clothing in your wardrobe and asking the simple question “Does this item bring me joy?”
Once you’ve done this you’ll find yourself with a pile of clothing that doesn’t bring you joy anymore and which you should either resell or hand over to a charity shop.
You should also check our recycling program to give your old tights a second life!
#2 Buy Better & Buy Less - “You’ll take better care of clothes you’ve paid a premium for”
Buy only what you really need and love. Buy quality and invest in items that will last many years. You’ll naturally take better care of clothes you’ve paid a premium for. Sustainably made luxury clothing is often of higher quality than its fast fashion counterparts. While sustainable luxury clothing may cost more up front, keep in mind that it may last significantly longer than a cheaply produced garment. Thus, it’ll most likely end up costing less in the long run if you factor in how many wears you will get out of it. Applying Lucy Siegle’s #30wear rule before buying a new garment is also a useful little rule of thumb.
#3 Cherish your Clothing- “Products that are taken care off will last longer”
Look at your clothing as indispensable items that should be taken care of instead of thrown away after a couple of wears. Mend, clean, fold and store them properly. Air or rinse your delicates by hand and otherwise wash cold or on 30 degrees max. Always use an organic washing powder such as Ecover’s and hang your clothes to dry.
#4 Buy Sustainably Made Clothing- “Even bigger chains often have a sustainable collection”
Who made your clothes? Inform yourself about your favorite brands and their commitment to sustainability! Even bigger chains often have a sustainable collection.

#5 Buy Timeless & Classic Clothing- “Simple and classic outfits never go out of style!”
Finally but not least, don’t let the latest trends guide what you buy nor overshadow your personal style. Instead, look for classic garments and timeless design. Check out some of the world’s most stylish women and fashion icons and find inspiration from them, for instance Princess Diana, Birgitte Bardot and Jane Birkin. In fact, these women became famous for just this, wearing classic, well-designed and timeless outfits.
